Drain-Plane creates a drainage cavity that protects your home against the damaging effects of moisture. Moisture intrusion and entrapment is recognized as one of the most important concerns to the building and construction products industries because it can pose a potential threat to the durability and safety of your home. Drainage Key Part of Solution… Water Resistive Barriers (WRBs) have been used to address the problem of water intrusion. The problem was not resolved as the inevitable intrusion of water through the cladding or siding becomes trapped between the cladding and the WRB. The trapped moisture leads to mold, rot and other water intrusion problems. Recognizing that eventually all types of cladding will allow some moisture to penetrate, section R703.1 of the International Residential Code (IRC) was modified in 2006 to require "a means of draining water that enters the assembly to the exterior."
Rain screens shed most of the rain and manage the rest, preventing moisture intrusion and protecting your home from its damaging effects. The rain screen wall system includes the following elements: Exterior Cladding , Air Cavity , Drainage Plane and Airtight Support Wall. The exterior cladding deters surface rain. The air cavity decouples the cladding from the support wall, reducing splash and moisture transfer. The drainage plane promotes convective airflow, thereby allowing moisture to drain, evaporate, dissipate, and weep from the air cavity. A weather resistive barrier is applied to the support wall to further protect against the remaining differential air pressure force.
